I have not been a huge risk taker most of my life. There have been times I have taken risks, like when I moved from my college town to San Antonio, Texas, or when I moved from San Antonio to Greenville, South Carolina, for a boyfriend, but in general I like to play it safe. I am learning that taking chances is necessary if you want to grow both in your personal and business life. Staying “stuck” where you are will keep you exactly where you are. For me, I want to continue to grow and change and learn.
When I moved to San Antonio, I was single and ready for a change. I knew very few people in San Antonio so it stretched me because I had to go out and meet new people and make new friends. I was only in San Antonio for a year, but I loved it there – my apartment, my teaching job, the city. It was a really cool place to live. I look back now, and I am thankful I took that risk.
When I moved from San Antonio to Greenville, I had not been dating my boyfriend at the time for very long. We met online and were long distance so we both thought it would be good to live in the same place to truly get to know each other. That was a huge risk on my part because I picked up and moved for a guy! I loved where I was living and could always return if things did not work out, but it was a huge change for me. I had never lived anywhere but Texas. I got to Greenville and ended up engaged, but within a year of moving there, my fiancé broke off the engagement and ended the relationship. At the time, I was devastated. It was the hardest thing I had ever gone through. A broken heart is no joke. Some might look at my decision to take that risk as a wrong decision because I did not end up married to that boyfriend/fiancé. However, I look at it as a huge success because taking that risk got me to Greenville. After my fiancé called it off, I decided to stay in Greenville. A few years later, I met my future husband, and we have been married for almost 14 years now. I also have so many amazing friends here that I would not have had if I did not take that chance and make the move to Greenville.
With having a business coach right now, I am learning that taking chances in business can have amazing outcomes, as well. Taking the chance on creating a vision for yourself of what you want your life to be, and then believing it will really happen is the first step. Taking the chance on changing your mindset, learning how to think differently than how you were conditioned to think through family, culture, and society, and opening up to the idea of endless possibilities is the second step. Taking the chance on implementing your vision as it starts to take shape despite the fears or doubts that may come up is the next step. That is the step I am currently on, and it makes me smile to think about.
What are chances you have taken in the past? What was the outcome? Is there something now that you need to take a chance on? I would love to hear your about your experiences.
I love inspirational wall art, journals, jewelry…anything that motivates and encourages me. The journal below is very simple, but I love it!
